Heart transplant surgery has been perfected in recent years and is now a common procedure. As a result, there is a shortage of donor hearts in the United States, and many patients die while waiting for a donated organ. Scientists in Seattle, Washington are now testing technology aimed at keeping donated hearts in good condition during transport, so that fewer of them are lost on the way.
