Jubin Nautiyal’s latest single, Haaye Dil, has garnered over a million views within a day of its release. However, not many know that the track was initially supposed to be featured in the soundtrack of a Hindi film, which eventually got shelved.

“It was meant to be the title track of a movie revolving around a musician. But somehow, the film didn’t work out. We waited for over a year for the music to release. When that didn’t happen, we decided to release it as a single,” explains Jubin.

However, the film’s producers were against the idea of releasing the rock number as a solo project. In fact, they sent a notice to music label T-Series, which facilitated the song’s release, Jubin shares, adding, “When the authorities at T-Series realised our paperwork [documents relating to the copyright] was clean, they decided to go ahead with the single.”

As expected, the film’s makers have not taken kindly to Jubin releasing the song online under T-Series’ banner. Plaban Rath, the film’s co-producer, says, “The director and singer cheated us. We spent over Rs 1.5 crore on the music. Anyway, I wish the singer all the best.”

Jubin argues that he released the single since he owns the rights to his music. “I have signed documents from the producer, Plaban Rath, and his partner, Mohit Madan, acknowledging that the music rights belong to me. My contract said the makers would release the music in 2015. When they failed to do so, all rights came back with me.”

The singer adds he still hasn’t been paid for that song. “I have been harassed for two years, waiting for the song to release. When I realised they have no intention of releasing the music, I did it with consent of my lawyers. Honestly, nothing is lost. If they still want to release the film or the music, I am willing to talk and take this ahead, like I have been for past two years,” he signs off.
