Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt received a death threat from an unidentified caller who reportedly demanded Rs 50 lakh. The person also threatened to kill Mahesh Bhatt’s wife Soni Razdan and daughter Alia Bhatt if he failed to deposit the amount in a Lucknow-based bank branch.
The incident took place on February 26. Mahesh Bhatt filed a case in Juhu police station on Wednesday.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the suspect Sandeep Sahu has been arrested from Uttar Pradesh by the state’s special’s task force and Mumbai Crime Branch. The report added that UP police are questioning the suspect who was traced by the anti-extortion cell of Mumbai Crime Branch.
According to a report in India Today, the case has been registered under section 387 (causing a person to fear death or grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion). The police also recorded a statement from Bhatt’s family.
The report added Mahesh Bhatt got the phone call from a person, claiming to be a gang leader, who demanded Rs 50 lakh. Mahesh Bhatt initially thought it was a prank. However, the caller later sent him texts and WhatsApp messages, and warned him not to take the threats lightly.
“If you fail to do so, I will fire several rounds of bullets in your daughter Alia and wife Soni,” the report said.
Mahesh Bhatt was asked to deposit the money in a Lucknow-based bank branch.
