Bollywood filmmakers have contributed to the cause of women empowerment by serving up a clutch of powerful, female-centric movies in the past few years. Now, the cine workers’ union also seems eager to uphold women’s rights. After Ram Gopal Varma posted a sexist tweet on Women’s Day, targeting Sunny Leone, members of the Film Studio Setting and Allied Mazdoor Union claim they decided to teach him a lesson.

The union general secretary, Gangeshwar Shrivastav, says, “Along with other members, I headed to the set of RGV’s (Amitabh Bachchan-starrer) film to disrupt shoot and demand apology for the tweet.” RGV’s tweet read, “I wish all the women in the world give men as much happiness as Sunny Leone gives (sic).”

“Most members of the film’s crew are a part of our union. We told them not to work with a person who doesn’t respect women. He not only insulted Sunny [Leone], but every woman of the country,” says Shrivastav.

When we had reached out to Varma on Thursday for a response after buzz of his shoot being stalled started doing the rounds, he had said, “Not true. Shooting got over a month ago.”

Shrivastav, however, argues a major chunk of the film has been shot, but a few crowd shots were being canned at Gol Maidan, Versova that day. “Every crew member, including his production assistants, sided with us and we peacefully left the place,” he adds.
