Members of fringe groups staged protests outside superstar Rajinikanth’s residence in Chennai. Members of a Tamil fringe group burnt an effigy of Rajinikanth protesting against his entry into politics.
Fringe group Tamilar Munnetra Padai protested against Rajinikanth’s entry into Tamil Nadu politics. “He is a Kannadiga and he cannot enter politics in Tamil Nadu,” said Veeralakshmi, a protester.
Security has been tightened outside Tamil superstar Rajinikant’s residence after protests by pro-Tamil group Tamilar Munnetra Padai saying ‘Kannadiga shouldn’t rule Tamil Nadu’.
Protests against Rajinikanth come in the midst of debate around his entry into politics. Permission for the protest was granted but at a different venue.
Not just Tamilar Munnetra Padai, but other outfits like Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) too are against Rajinikanth’s ‘sudden entry’ into politics. TVK leader and former PMK strongman T Velmurugan told TNM, “Rajinikanth is someone who has never made his ideologies clear. He has never spoken out on what he thinks of many issues that plague and affect Tamilians. Let him tell us where he stands on issues of the common people, only then can he enter politics. He can’t simply jettison into politics.”
Rajinikanth speech last week was the biggest hint in over two decades that he could join politics. Calling the political system corrupt, he urged his supporters to “prepare for war” when the time comes.
While political parties are divided on Rajinikanth’s political debut, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy was the first to pass a remark on Rajinikanth’s non-Tamil roots. Rajinikanth had responded to the remarks during his meet with fans and claimed that he had spent four decades in Tamil Nadu and was a pure tamilian.
